Emerald

Emerald is derived from the Greek word
'Smaragdus', which means 'green stone'.
About 4000 years ago, the ancient
Egyptians mined Emerald. These ancient mines
are now called Cleopatra's Mines
The Romans dedicated this stone
to their goddess of love and beauty, Venus.
Cleopatra was an avid collector of this so revered
gemstone.
Regarded as a trinket for good fortune, it empowers
the owner with foresight into the future, and
is regarded as a symbol of fertility, rebirth
and springtime. We maintain these associations
between Emerald and fertility, allowing it a
place as the gemstone of spring and the birthstone
for the month of May.
It is said that gazing on an Emerald is an aid
for soothing the eyes, due to its green hue.
It is recommended for strengthening the nervous
system, acquiring wealth, knowledge, peace of
mind, rise in religious and spiritual affairs.
Emeralds are cut in Jaipur,
India and Tel-Aviv, Israel as well as in the
mining countries. Emerald is one of the most
difficult gemstones to cut because of the high
value of the rough stone and the many inclusions
found in crystals. Small changes in orientation
can make a large difference in the final appearance
of the gem. Skilled craftsman who specialize
in cutting emerald can be found in cities around
the world for jewelers who insist on having
stones perfected for the optimum brilliance
and vibrancy.
When choosing an emerald, the
most important value factor to consider is color.
The more vivid the green, the more valuable
the emerald. There are also attractive bright
stones with a lighter green color that often
make a spectacular piece of jewelry. Darker
green emeralds may also make up in rich color
what they lose in brightness.
Alternate Names for Emerald

(Sanskrit), Zamurrad (Persia), Smarlda(Latin),
Esmaurde(Latin).
